Kate Pickering began her career at the BBC working in television production and development for ten years. She left to explore the role of creativity in business and has since worked cross sector in innovation capability, using her creative skills and learning to support organisation in their innovation journey. Kate was nominated an RSA Fellow in recognition of her work to promote innovation and community cohesion following her design and delivery of an innovation programme for Greater Manchester. It engaged public, private and research sectors in tackiling some of the big challenges the region has. Kate now leads the Innovation Programme at Co-operatives UK and is establishing CQ to support organisations in collaborative innovation.

Dave Dawes is a social entrepreneur who has founded and run a number of social enterprises, has helped dozens of other entrepreneurs set up their own social enterprises and has raised venture capital and CSR investment for three of his own social enterprises. Tamsin Fielden is an energetic marketing professional with 17 years experience within consumer, healthcare and third sector organisations. She has provided strategic marketing, business development and strategic planning for organisations from start-up social enterprises to medium sized social enterprises with turnover in excess of £1.5m. She has enabled programmes within youth and community engagement, employability, mental health, community asset management and health education. She is an energetic speaker and trainer, with a passion for helping social enterprises flourish.
Karl Sanderson has over 15 years in the advertising & communication design business working for several top ten multi-national agencies including Ogilvy & DDB. This award winning creative director started his career as an art director in London before returning to his native North taking the creative director role at Vivid. Throughout his career Karl has been responsible for building brands and creating campaigns specialising in social marketing for the likes of The Samaritans, COI, NHS, Smokefree, Encams, The FA, The Football League, Interpol, Environment Agency and the NWDA.

Isla Wilson has worked for some of the largest organisations in the UK, including Virgin, Sainsbury’s and WHSmith. She is an experienced Management Consultant, with a specific interest in how Social Purpose and Outcomes can be a core part of the growth strategy for all organisations.
She now runs RubyStar Associates, an organisation which specialises in ooomph for businesses, social enterprises and charities. We support organisations to: maintain their momentum, increase their sales, improve their processes and make more of the opportunities which surround them.
5. Help! What type of social enterprise should I be?…
Sara Burgess became the Regulator of Community Interest Companies in September 2007. As a light touch regulator, Sara’s key role is to raise awareness of community interest companies and maintain public confidence in the CIC legal form. As a former Chief Executive of a charity, Sara has 23 years experience of working in the third sector, with a variety of small local and large national charities. She also has experience of running her own management consultancy business. Sara has offered her skills on a voluntary basis and has sat on voluntary management committees, including Chair of a local CVS, and as an advocate with people with learning disabilities.
Catherine Rustomji - Senior Solicitor, Head of Third Sector North – is an experienced charity solicitor who advises on all aspects of charity law and regulation, in particular governance and constitutional issues, incorporations and advising charity trustees on their duties and responsibilities. Catherine is a member of the Executive Committee of the Charity Law Association and is currently its Honorary Secretary. Chambers UK 2010 states “She has established herself as a notable practitioner in the field and sources reveal that her profile is ‘growing by the day’.

Brigid Benson set up GÆIA in 1993, having trained and worked as an Independent Financial Adviser since 1989, always specialising in ethical and environmental funds. Prior to joining Financial Services, she worked in International Marketing; has taught French, Spanish and Business Studies. She has lived in France, Spain, Jamaica and the U.S.
GÆIA is based in Manchester with a small team of advisers and administrators servicing several thousand clients who include individuals, charities, organisations and businesses. GÆIA recently announced a merger with Castlefield Investment Management, a business owned partly by a charitable foundation and employee benefits trust.

Steph Dawson has an extensive track record in both public, third and private sector, delivering projects and policy at a local and national level. She is a specialist in determining the impact of projects and has worked to support social businesses develop from initial ideas though to business plans for growth. Steph has led on evaluation and research for priorities in national education policy including literacy, STEM and schools facing challenging circumstances. She is an experienced trainer, assessor, verifier, consultant and mentor.
8. Scaling up without the growing pains…
Steven Leach had a long career with a multinational IT company and gained wide experience in all aspects of business including customer relationship management, sales and marketing management and organisational development and change management. He then enjoyed ten years as an independent providing communication, change, merger strategy and sales development services to businesses large and small.
Steven has been with Unltd for over a year working with a range of clients. Marketing, sales and business planning has been combined with business development and scale and replication work, most notably as part of the UnLtd Advantage Investment Readiness service.

10. Meet a Geek: how free technology can help your social business thrive…
Steven Flower has worked in and around technology for social good his whole working life, from installing and fixing computers, through to building large data systems and web projects. Over this period, Steven has slowly understood that computers are just bits of metal and that real value comes from focusing on the goals and needs of an organisation before anyone touches a keyboard. Obviously, Steven likes post-its.

Ameena Ahmed has nearly 20 years management experience in the public, education and charity sector. She has been project director for a youth counselling services Charity, where she increased revenues 5 fold through pioneering new services and revenue streams. She has over seven years experience in an ‘Excellent’ 4 Star Council, leading the Directorate’s Partnership Development Unit, working with over 30 partners.
She has delivered complex Compact agreements, comprising multi-agency sign off, resulting in safer, healthier communities of children, young people and families. She founded Direct Path to help delivery organisations and public bodies increase the impact of social change.
12. Tackling environmental issues- why do it and how?
Steven Glynn is a Partner at Sustainable Change Co-operative and has been working on environmental issues for over 16 years. This work has been characterised by its variety from major research projects, to support for businesses, to working with community organisations. All this is driven by a passion to put the environment and the idea of sustainability at the heart of how we work and live, and a belief that it is organisations that embrace this that will succeed. Steven is a board member of Co-operatives Northwest and tweets at @Sust_Change.

Moheeb Abualqumboz is a Postgraduate researcher in Department of Management of Projects, MACE at the University of Manchester. He has been a trainer and consultant in project management, strategy, operations management, and personal development for the last 8 years. He has provided project management, business development, and strategic planning to organisations ranging from start-up to medium-size organisations including social enterprises with turnover of £9m.
Moheeb has developed programmes for youth and community engagement which were funded by more than £8m within the last four years. He is an energetic speaker and enthusiastic to transfer knowledge and experience to people.
Vanessa Augustus founded the Social Solutions Academy in 2009. This pioneering organisation encourages collaboration across sectors to accelerate social innovation. Over the last two years the SSA has successfully worked in partnership with a range of organisations. In doing so, we have supported over 350 social entrepreneurs, public sector representatives and private sector executives. Vanessa is a visionary social entrepreneur.
Vanessa’s knowledge and experience as an innovative and creative evaluator, trainer and business coach have made long lasting social impacts. Under her leadership the SSA is preparing to launch an online tool to improve partnership working for SMEs.

Gillian Williams, Owner, Hatherlow HR is an independent consultant, facilitator and coach dedicated to helping businesses and employees engage with each other to achieve success in a high performance environment. Gillian has worked in senior Human Resources and Purchasing roles in international manufacturing and technology industries with responsibility across the UK, Europe and the United States. She brings a strong commercial focus, a determination to succeed, an understanding of cultural diversity and experience in successfully developing high performance in both unionised and non-unionised environments. Her philosophy is that high performance is achieved by engaging employees with an inspirational vision and clear objectives.
Claire Brook, Partner, Employment Team, Aaron & Partners studied Law, Human Resources and Japanese at Keele University, completing her studies at the College of Law in Chester. Claire joined Aaron & Partners in July 2005 and became a Partner in June 2009.
Claire advises a wide range of clients on all aspects of employment law, is an Employment Tribunal advocate and has particular expertise in the field of contractual terms and policies, including advising on TUPE and collective redundancies. Claire is a member of the Law Society, Employment Lawyers Association and is Chair of Cheshire WITCHES (Women in Touch With Claire House Children’s Hospice).
